Anyone involved in the history of the club who may be able to correct or add to these notes should contact us.
Some movers and shakers who established the first days of the club in the early 1970’s were Dr. Sandy Milne, Brian Gale, Ian Templeman, Tony Loveday and John Bestmann (not necessarily in any order). Initial club operations were not at Cooby Dam but Leslie Dam near Warwick.
14th June 1977. DDSC was officially allowed to conduct sailing on Cooby Dam and had a home close to Toowoomba. This was apparently due to lobbying Clive Berghofer by Brian Gale.
5th October 1983 Darling Downs Sailing Club became an Incorporated Association. The 1980’s were very successful for DDSC with large and active membership.
The droughts of 2005-2011 and the recent one which only ended in early 2022 have been very hard on the club. The recent drought was compounded by Covid and dam closures due to water quality issues. There was virtually no sailable water for years on end and therefore no club activity, little income and little interest.
Darling Downs Sailing Club recently celebrated it’s 50 year anniversary and we are back.
